The museum building itself is an important museum exhibit. It is a rare surviving example of a bungalow constructed of corrugated iron on a wooden frame that was erected in the late nineteenth century. John Wield (1877-1965) was a keen photographer and his photographic collection is the basis of the museum. The collection of images is a unique and valuable record of life in Woodhall Spa and includes images of both people and the local area.

Past and Present – Houses and Homes

A new temporary exhibition is now on display until the 7th June. View amazing photographs of Victorian and Edwardian buildings in Woodhall Spa and compare them with images of the present day. See how much you think the townscape has changed or is still recognisable.

Workshops for schools

Two Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 cross-curricular workshops can be booked by schools. ‘Toys and Games – Past and Present’ will use a selection of photographic images from the Collection to help pupils learn about the Wield family who lived in the bungalow in Victorian and Edwardian times. Pupils will be able to play some period games, dress as a Victorian, listen to stories about the donkeys at the museum and make a simple toy or game.

Photographs from the collection will be used in the Shopping Past and Present workshop to help pupils discover the shopping experience in times gone by. The workshop will include dressing in Victorian costume, visiting the shop and using pre-decimal currency, plus weighing activities and investigating packaging and brand names.
